What’s the Difference Between a Goal and a Vision?

Most leaders treat internal conflict as a distraction from the mission. Nehemiah treats it as part of it. When his own people start taking advantage of each other in the middle of building the wall — charging usury, selling their own children into slavery just to survive — Nehemiah doesn’t say “stay focused.” He calls a great assembly and deals with it directly. Because if the vision is for God’s people to live together in safety and prepare for the coming Messiah, you can’t get there while you’re treating each other like enemies.

In this episode, Dr. Abidan Shah walks through the difference between core values, mission, and vision — and why knowing all three changes how a leader responds to conflict. He also works through one of the most important leadership principles in the series: rebuilders never cut what they can untie. In a culture that says go no contact, cut toxic people off, and leave at the first red flag, Nehemiah works through the knots of interpersonal relationships without severing them. And Dr. Shah makes the point that the people who were quick to cut ties were never truly in the vision to begin with.
