What Were Ancient Bibles Written On? | Making Parchment in Pergamum

Long before the printing press, every copy of the Bible was written by hand — and for more than a thousand years, most of those copies weren’t written on paper at all. They were written on skin.

Dr. Abidan Shah traveled to Turkey, near the ancient city of Pergamum, to see how parchment is still made by hand the old way — and to try it himself.

In this episode:

• Where the word “parchment” comes from

• Pergamum, papyrus, and the race for the greatest library

• Why parchment replaced papyrus

• The five steps: soak, scrape, stretch, scrape again, cut

• Why lime makes parchment different from leather

• How sheets become a codex

• Codex Sinaiticus and the 360 animal hides behind its pages
