The Opposition Might Be Coming From Inside You

Anytime you do something worth doing, there will be opposition. That’s a principle of life — but especially when you’re doing something for the kingdom of God. What Nehemiah’s story reveals, though, is that a lot of the time the biggest opposition isn’t coming from the outside. It’s coming from inside of you.

In this episode, Dr. Abidan Shah connects Nehemiah’s calling to Esther’s famous moment — “who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this” — and draws out what happens to the people who get afraid at the critical moment and don’t move. He shares a story from a staff retreat where a team member turned back three steps from the top of a steep rock outcropping after already making it three-fourths of the way up, and makes the case that this is exactly what fear does in ministry: it doesn’t always make you retreat. Sometimes it just makes you freeze. Hudson Taylor’s principle holds: God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply. But you have to keep climbing.
