Nehemiah didn’t face one enemy. He faced three — and they came at him from every direction. Sanballat the Horonite from the north, Tobiah the Ammonite from the east, Gesham the Arab from the south. But the most interesting thing about this episode isn’t the geography. It’s what these three men represent: the world, the flesh, and the devil — the same ancient trio that opposes God’s people in every generation.
In this episode, Dr. Abidan Shah unpacks each opponent one by one. Sanballat is the world — an outsider with political power and everything to lose if Jerusalem gets rebuilt. Gesham is the devil — controlling the trade routes that carry the very gifts the wise men would one day bring to the Christ child. And Tobiah is the most unsettling of the three: ethnically Jewish, bearing a Hebrew name that means “Yahweh is good,” and yet completely aligned against the plan of salvation. He’s not the enemy outside the walls. He’s the enemy with a familiar face — and Dr. Shah doesn’t let anyone off the hook by pointing out how much of Tobiah lives inside all of us.
